PMC provides internet access to patients, families
PMC provides Internet access to patients, families (From Wayne Herald, 4/24/08)
Providence Medical Center in Wayne now has wireless Internet access throughout much of the hospital. Merlin Wright, whose mother, Pearl was recently a patient at the hospital said, “As I thought about this project being undertaken by the PMC Foundation and PMC, I had a couple of observations. I’ve always been thinking of using the laptop from a patient’s perspective; however, as my relatives and I have been visiting Mom in the hospital and using the laptop, it occurs to me that perhaps more families and visitors of patients might be using the laptop to make connections to other relatives.”
Several members of Wright’s family have benefited from having the laptop available. It has allowed them to stay in touch with their businesses and lives in their hometowns while spending time with hospitalized relatives. Several family members from out-of-state were appreciative of the fact that the service was available and they could stay connected with obligations while here in Wayne.
Foundation President Sandra Bartling said that the Foundation Board of Directors recently purchased the first laptop for patient/family use. “Merlin has been very instrumental in encouraging the Foundation to consider the impact that Internet access could have on our patients and their family members. We began our conversation about this topic nearly three years ago. Sometimes I’m sure it seemed to Merlin that we (the Foundation and the hospital IT department) were moving much too slowly. Nearly two years ago a computer with Internet access was made available for patients and family members in the hospital’s solarium. Today, however, Merlin and his family literally are benefiting from wireless Internet access and a new hospital laptop… all available right in his mother’s room at Providence Medical Center.”
Members of the PMC Foundation and hospital staff have begun the monitoring process to determine usage of the laptop. This will be ongoing for a period of six months or so. At the end of that period, a determination will be made if usage warrants one or more laptops. Fore more information about the laptop or the PMC Foundation, contact Sandra Bartling at 375-5529.
