Cancer Support Group
Providence Medical Center offers a Cancer Support Group that meets each second Monday of the month at 5:15 p.m. in the Chaplin Room. The service for all area cancer patients, or spouses, is offered at no cost and lasts about an hour.
Staff members in charge of the group and guiding the sessions include Ruth Peters, RN-OCN; Pam Matthes, R.N.; Tammie Thomsen, R.N; and Jill Belt, LMHP, CSW.
Hospital sponsors note that the purpose of the CSG program is to provide any area cancer patient, a spouse, and/or family members, opportunity to learn more of the skills needed in solving problems related to the challenges facing cancer patients. Participants need not call ahead to attend meetings.
Following a light lunch provided by the hospital, participants learn more about such subjects as chemotherapy, radiation, medical terms, grief, depression, talking to one’s doctor, communicating one’s feelings to family and friends, medications, and other subjects of mutual interest. Specialists make presentations relating to a particular topic.
Further information is available by emailing either Jill Belt or Ruth Peters at Providence Medical Center.
